Frequently Asked Questions - Talon Camera Models
Question: The camera will not POWER on, what should I do?
Answer: Be sure that all batteries are installed correctly. Improper installation of batteries may result in damage to the camera.
Question: The camera is stuck on "RECON OUTDOORS" and the BUSY LIGHT stays on. Why?
Answer: The camera is unable to communicate with the compact flashcard. You may have either a Compact Flashcard that is to large or is not formatted correctly.
Question: What SIZE COMPACT FLASHCARD should I use with my Talon camera?
Answer: All models of the Talon camera line are able to handle up to a 2GB Compact Flashcard formatted to FAT or FAT32 formats.
Question: How do I know WHICH FORMAT I should use for my Recon Talon?
Answer: Move your toggle switch to the Setup position. The version of firmware that your camera is programmed with determines the formatting. If your version shows 400.345 or above your camera is programmed for Fat32. Any version number less than 444.345 requires FAT format.
Question: Will I lose my TIME, DATE and ID SETTINGS once the camera is turned off?
Answer: The camera retains the ID settings when it is power off and even when batteries are removed.
Question: My camera SHOWS I HAVE IMAGES, but there is no Compact Flashcard inserted?
Answer: The Talon cameras are equipped with a built-in memory that is used to store images when a Compact Flashcard card is not installed. The internal memory will store up to 25 images.
Question: For FIELD SETUP, how high and how much distance from the target should I set my camera up?
Answer: Conditions and terrain will vary but always set the camera so that the laser hits the center mass of your target, 20 to 30 feet is the optimum target distance from the camera to the target.
Question: The camera is MISSING PICTURES at a distance, but capturing images close up. What should I do?
Answer: In order to have the best chance of getting good pictures at a longer distance set your PIR sensor setting on "LONG" or "HOT". This sets the PIR sensor at it's peak sensitivity.
Question: I can't view my Movies thru the Video Port. I can view my Pictures. What do I do?
Answer: Currently your Talon Movies must be viewed on a computer using free QuickTime player. This requires a computer card reader, which can be purchased from RECON OUTDOORS or virtually any retail store (Best Buy, Office Max, Target). The Video Port is used to view Still Pictures. These Pictures may appear low-resolution on the Video Port because they are scanned out in 320x240 resolution. When viewed on a computer, the images are seen in full 1280x1024 resolution.
Question: How many pictures will my Recon camera take on a set of batteries?
Answer: You can take approximately 800 to 2,000 pictures depending on the temperature and numberr of night pictures taken.
Question: I live in a COLD CLIMATE and batteries do not last. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer: Recon Outdoors in 2009 made the Extreme Weather Kit standard on all of our Talon Extreme models. However we do offer an upgrade to older model cameras that will allow an external 12-volt battery source to be used for extreme heat or cold weather conditions. For more information please contact Recon Outdoors.
